Our New Year's Plan


Everyone we talk to is asking what kind of New Year's deals we'll be offering at the gym. People who want to sell us marketing keep telling us how 70%+ of a gym's revenue comes in January. There is a lot of pressure in the fitness industry to try to "capture" the New Year's resolutions, to try to get people to sign up for a membership they're not going to use. We're not offering any deals or trying to lock anyone into committing to a long contract to prey on their resolution ambitions. We want you here if you're really ready to make a change, if you really believe in our vision that simple strength training can make you healthier than ever.

While we are thrilled for new people to join us in January, it's not fair to our long-term clients if we offer New Year's deals. It's not fair if you joined us early and supported our vision, only to find out that the person who walks in off the street in January gets a special deal. We have had ridiculously good retention rates, much better than we even hoped for! We think that's because we're giving you quality training and smart programming at a fair price. You bought in to us early, and we appreciate it, and we are going to treat you fairly.

If the gym suddenly got crowded on January 1, what do you think would happen to that quality training and smart programming you currently get? If the classes grew all of a sudden, we couldn't focus on you as well as we do today. If a bunch of new clients showed up Monday we'd have to bring down the skill level on our programming. We program fairly high-skill movements. We love teaching new people. We love seeing people do things they never thought they could do. But it works best when we grow slowly, so that we can bring a new member up to speed with the help of the rest of the experienced class members. We couldn't do that if we were casting a wide net trying to take advantage of those New Year's resolutions. We want you to bring your friends and family, not because they'll get a screaming deal, but because you won't shut up about how great Barbell Strategy is.

What about those of you who really do want to make a change in 2016 and are thinking about joining? If we tried to lock you in to a long-term contract at a discount rate and had full classes, we couldn't help you either. We really want to make a change in your lives, help you achieve your goals in the new year. The best way to do that is to focus on those who really are ready to change, not those drawn in by a great deal. We don't want to lock you into a long contract to get a good deal. We want you to stay with us because we're actually helping you get healthier.

If you're serious about making a change in 2016, we welcome you to our gym. We will help you with smart programming that doesn't beat you down. We will help you with your nutrition. We will provide you with a community of supportive, friendly, committed people to train with. We will serve you by offering you the best we have.
