My skewed view of strength

I bought a new over-the-range microwave this weekend. After I carried up the stairs and through the front door I noticed the warning. What has happened to society that a 50 lb (if that!) microwave is considered an excessive weight hazard! (For the record, Amy had no trouble holding it overhead.)
I spend a lot of time around really strong people - all of you guys! Since I don't really spend much time around the average city-dweller, I guess I have a skewed view of reality. I had a chance this weekend to have a little down time, so I took a walk along the Pearl Street Mall. I've been so busy trying to start a new business, having a new baby, and managing a full-time job, I hadn't been out in a while. I was shocked how weak everyone looked - and this is in Boulder, one of America's "healthiest" cities!

I don't say this to make fun of anyone or be mean, I'm sure everyone wants to be healthier. It's just that the media gets it all wrong and tells people to do ineffective work. I have to say, though, that I am really concerned for the health of the country. Everyone I saw was shuffling along, walking with a short stride, hunched over with rounded shoulders and poor posture, showing no muscle definition at all.

I hope we can fix this because humans are supposed to be strong and capable. We are all capable of so much in terms of health and fitness. People need to prioritize their physical health and wellness, and they need to accept that there is more to learn and more to gain. That is what we are here for, to help people get closer to their potential.

After I wrote this post, this article came across my RSS feed. I get lots of raised eyebrows or even concerned comments when people hear that I'm home-schooling my kids. But this is one reason - kids aren't meant to sit all day. We need a societal change that promotes physical education, natural movement, and nature time at least as much (if not more) than pure academic endeavors. (I say this as someone who spent way too much time in school.)
