My wish for your health this summer

My nutrition wish for you
The weather in Boulder is getting nice, and spring is the time when I've noticed that everyone starts to really think about making changes for their health and fitness.

If I had one nutrition wish for you this spring, it would be for you to cut out soda, juice, sugary drinks, beer, etc. Here's the classic video on why sugar and sugary drinks are toxic, but in addition to that there are other biochemical feedback systems that get set up when you chew your food. Mainlining sugar straight to your stomach is not good. Drink only water, coffee, tea.

If I had two nutrition wishes for you, the first would be for you to stop drinking your calories. The second would be for you to cut out the grains. I didn't say cut out carbs or go low carb. If you're training hard in the gym, or are active on the weekend you probably still need plenty of carbs, but not from grains. Even if you don't believe me, try it for 30-45 days. Everyone that I've convinced to at least give it a try has felt better. From inflammation to leaky gut to insidious autoimmune problems, we usually see grains playing a central rule.

If I had three nutrition wishes, the first would be the crap about the drinking your calories, the second would be the grains, and the third would be for you to cook at home. When you eat out you are surely getting lots of bad fats (industrial vegetable oils) rather than high-quality saturated animal and tropical fats and monounsaturated fats (olive oil, avocados). The interaction between the grains and the inflammatory fats sets up a vicious cycle of sickness leading to most of the diseases of modern civilization. You are in complete control of your diet when you eat at home. We go out for breakfast on Sundays, it's our fun family tradition. But I still feel pretty sketchy when we come home from that - I eat eggs and hashbrowns, which is the same thing I cook for myself every morning. The only difference is the cheap unstable fats that they use.

And of course, all of the children of the world to join hands and sing together in the spirit of peace and harmony.
