Another rant against the Boulder Soda Tax

You'd think as someone who cares so much about teaching good health habits that I opened a gym, I'd be all for the Soda Tax Boulder was pushing last year. There's no good reason to drink soda, it's terrible for you - and you don't want to become diabetic, ask all the folks who are doing our seven-day carb test how much fun it is to test your blood sugar.

But I'm too much of a Libertarian to support dumb taxes like this - really I don't support any taxes, I'm a pay-as-you-go kind of guy - but I can at least understand the argument of taxes that pay for things we get (like roads). But taxes that are really only punishment are silly.

You may recognize the Laffer curve above, and while there's much debate on how correct that model is, you can't argue with what's happening in other cities that had the same outside lobbying effort to get soda taxes there.

From The Consumerist: Most Philadelphia Stores Claim Double-Digit Sales Declines Due To Soda Tax

Here's the gist: you live in Philly, and you want to buy some groceries, you can go down the street and get your groceries (which includes soda) and pay a large soda tax. Or you can drive over to New Jersey and buy all your groceries there and pay no soda tax. Now your local grocer isn't just losing the soda sale, they're losing your entire grocery bill.

Hmm...wonder what happens when a city implements a 10¢ tax on grocery bags to save the environment? Well, I only buy small things at the grocery store a mile from my house. Instead, I drive to Superior to do my weekly stock-up at their Whole Foods (where they double-bag without me asking). I wonder what's better for the environment?

Boulder City elections are coming up soon. Vote Smart.
