Back to school priorities

I noticed a little drop-off in attendance from our students this year. I know it's a struggle to prioritize everything when school starts, but I want to make a case for getting into the gym. I have spent way too much time in school in my life - I think I had 25 first days of school. Regardless of my workload, I always made time to be in the gym. I didn't know as much then as you guys do now, so I spent a LONG time in the gym.

Even now, with my soul-crushing real job plus spending the evenings at the gym coaching, I still find time to get something in every day. You can't spend all of your time thinking and creating; your brain needs a reset, and there's nothing better for that than lifting some heavy weights.

Take a look at your day. Are you really being productive every time you sit down to do some school work? I doubt it. There's a limited amount of creativity your brain can produce each day. I shouldn't admit this publicly, but in my real job - where I need to be really creative - I really only get about 3-4 hours of real work done in any given week. Most of my time is trying to look busy while my brain is chewing on a problem. If I had the luxury of school where I didn't need to physically be at my job, I would actually be more creative.

Don't just study for the sake of studying. Putting in the time is just wasting time, you want to be putting in quality, focused effort. If you take a break from your studies and get some physical activity in, you'll come back refreshed and more efficient with your work. You don't know how many problems I've solved in my head while sitting on the box between deadlifts - it also doesn't hurt that we are the nerd gym and there's always someone to bounce ideas off!

Make time for the gym this school year. Find the busy work and cut it out. Only do what's productive. Get back under the barbell.
